What’s The Difference Between a Latte, Cappuccino, and an Au Lait [infographic]

Order The Espresso Field Guide Poster!

So today I posted this image on my facebook page in order to help you visualize what the difference is between different espresso and coffee based drinks.  Although there are some regional variances, this espresso field guide is very accurate. There are other more popular image guides, but none are more detailed, or more accurate than this one (note there is no caramel, whipped cream, or sugar in the Macchiato)!  I am surprised at the number of ‘baristas’ that do not understand the difference between even the most basic of coffee drinks! There are many great baristas out there that are exceptionally knowledgeable who create spectacular drinks for sure, but I am not privileged enough to live close to any of them. 🙁  Oh well, this has fueled my desire to learn how to brew the best coffee at home, and I have been quite successful. It also makes traveling even more of an adventure when I get to hunt for (and find) amazing coffee shops. Also note that you can order this image on shirts, posters, and other items at Get this poster!.  Cheers! c[_]

Nate is a special kind of coffee lover. He began drinking the same swill that most others do, but thought there must be something better out there. Sure enough, he was right, even more so than he ever dreamed possible. He soon found his way into the specialty coffee industry, and was tasting exceptional coffees from dozens of roasters from around the country. He is now committed to teaching others how they can appreciate coffee, and how they can make the best coffee in town and save money at the same time! Cheers c[_]

My god, I had no idea there was such diversity in coffee. I can see what you mean about barista’s, they seem more ingenuous in most places. Im an expresso guy myself, but it makes me want to try all the different types.

I’m a tea drinker, but I occasionally drink coffee. And when I do, I want it to be very very good. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from your site and your tweets!

Cafe con Leche is from Spain. It is made with espresso and steamed milk. It is not made with brewed coffee.

    • Not always. It *can* be made with espresso, but any brewed coffee can be used. Some brew in a moka pot, others use real espresso.
