CoffeeNate 31 :: What is a Coffee Snob?

ASK COFFEENATE

What do you think of when you hear the term ‘Coffee Snob’?  If you don’t know what a coffee snob is, then you probably think the definition of coffee snob is something negative. In reality, being a coffee snob means

that you are properly educated on the finer points of coffee; the different roasts, varietals, and brewing methods that impact the final product.  To outsiders, you appear to be a snob, but only because you cannot compromise your coffee morals by subjecting yourself to pre-ground, stale, burnt, or otherwise subpar coffee.  You cringe when you hear the word “eXpresso”, laugh when hear someone order a “triple-triple”, and cry when you see a ‘macchiato’ made with a gallon of caramel syrup!

What is a coffee snob? I am a coffee snob

CoffeeNate = Coffee Snob

Being a coffee snob is not about being a ‘snob’ at all, it’s about being educated, passionate, and informed about our beloved bean.  So don’t be ashamed to be a Cofee Snob, because that’s what I am, and I’m proud of it! I am CoffeeNate and a coffee snob!

I have awesome news about this month’s FREE coffee contest!  This month, my friend Johnny aka @BaristaOnDutY aka BODY Coffee is giving away some of his artisan pan roasted beans to 3 lucky CoffeeNate viewers!

Pan Roasted Coffee

BaristaOnDutY is a pan roasting magician!

So, with even better odds it’s even more reason to get entered early and often! I will be drawing and announcing a winner on April 1st, and it won’t be an April Fools joke.

How do you like the new video format?  I’m going with all videos being 5 minutes or less!  It’s important to me to get you some great information, but I want to give it quickly.  Please excuse the sounds of my little dudes running around during the filming.  I can’t keep them locked in the closet forever I suppose 😉  (that was a joke)  Thanks for stopping by, and please help me pay the bills by visiting my sponsors.  Take care!

SPECIAL BUY!
I loved this coffee from the Coffee Beanery, based in Flushing Michigan!  I found this coffee when I was reviewing some Kona coffee, and I liked this one almost as much as the Kona!  The %100 Kona was only $33.00 more per pound, reasonable for Kona, but the Guatemalan is a nice medium/light roast.  I recommend giving it a try, it’s the best bang for your buck! It’s called Guatemalan Huehuetenango and it is FairTrade/Organic.  At $12.99/lb it is a steal, order yours at CoffeeBeanery and get %10 off by using the Coffee Beanery coupon code: CB1010 or receive FREE SHIPPING on orders of +$40 with the Coffee Beanery promo code: CB1055
Coffee Snob Must Haves!

Nate

Nate is a special kind of coffee lover. He began drinking the same swill that most others do, but thought there must be something better out there. Sure enough, he was right, even more so than he ever dreamed possible. He soon found his way into the specialty coffee industry, and was tasting exceptional coffees from dozens of roasters from around the country. He is now committed to teaching others how they can appreciate coffee, and how they can make the best coffee in town and save money at the same time! Cheers c[_]

I am certainly a snob when it comes to the container, mug, cup, jar. Most despised one is the styrofoam cup. The intermingling of the hot coffee and the chemical fumes seeping out of the foam make me nauseous. I rather slurp it out my cupped hand, hot or not at all! Second to it is an ornate glass with a handle too small to stick even a pinkie thru, coffee plus foam piled over the top. Next bad one is a long thermos cup, where the dish washer can't get the residue out from the bottom. Ever. Anything else in terms of container is cool with me. What I'm snobbish about when it comes to the actual coffee are fakes. Kopi Luvak is famous for being faked. So is Jamaican Blue Mountain or our Kona coffee. But also when they fake or imitate bird friendly seals or fair trade marks. I found myself moving them in stores waaaay back on the shelf, out of sight of easily duped customers. Don't ask me what I will do when they trying to sneak GMO coffee on us unsuspecting coffee snobs- we'll better unite! Otherwise I am pretty mild mannered & not too critical about other coffee farmers work 🙂

    • Yes, Athena! No sense in getting the perfect coffee only to drink it from a foam cup. The wrong cup can add unwanted flavors, and chemicals, to your drink…yech!!

  • Amie

I couldn't agree more with Anthena's comment above. CoffeeNate, I just wanted to point out to your Canadian fans that the shipping on the Coffee Beanery coffee is 3x the cost of the actual beans- so a bulk purchase may be most beneficial:)

    • Thanks Amie! Perhaps if you live on the border 😉 you may have a friend who could lend you their shipping address? lol I didn't even know they shipped to Canada.

      • Also, if they DO ship to Canada, perhaps they will honor their coupon code CB1055 which is for free shipping on all orders over $40!

I'm proud to be a coffee snod and I reallize I bore most people when I talk about coffee. what I have realized is when I talk a littl bit and just let them taste my roast they will tollerate a little more of my rambling to them as long as they end up with more awsome coffee. LMAO PS. My wife hates coffee and gets mad when I wont shut up. she shaid I sound like the teacher on charle Brown.

    • I know what you mean Todd. I just give people a little tease, they usually ask the questions after that 🙂 You can ramble all you want here!

Coffee Afficianado is too hard to say, so Coffee "Snob" it is. LOL. I'm becoming a Coffee Snob. I LOVE learning how coffee is produced and how roasts affect the various beans. I love a great cup of coffee, but it is just as much fun to learn about my favorite drink. Does "fun" describe "snob"???

    • Isn't falling in love grand? Yes, it is also 'fun' to be a coffee snob…or coffee geek as some would say 🙂 I have learned so much since starting this site, one year ago! Nice to meet you Debbie, I look forward to chatting again.

I find myself going back and forth between average joe and coffee snob. I find that most of my friends and readers are like me though, just an average joe, that wants a better cup of coffee.

    • I think it's inevitable, you will evolve into a coffee snob eventually! Maybe more like 'Coffee Snob Lite'? You can appreciate a great cup, know why it's great, but still sip some robusta nastiness if need be! Hey, if there is nothing else available, why not? A bad cup just makes you more appreciative of an excellent one!

Nate, I think you are making a mistake about making your future videos 5 minutes or less. There is NO boredom in any of your videos about "everything coffee". I think that you use the time wisely to impart all of your information and opinions, and I always look forward to your next one. Please reconsider this decision. I am sure that I am not the only one with this opinion. Blanche

    • Thanks Blanche 🙂 It makes me happy to hear you say that (or should it be 'read you write that)! I can appreciate where you are coming from, but at the same time I think I try to put too much info into one video. I think if I have more focused, specialized videos, then it will be easier for viewers to implement, while being more convenient to watch in it's entirety. We can always go deeper into a topic, whether it's the following week, or in the comment section. I will keep your comment in mind though, and I truly appreciate you sharing your opinion! Take care 🙂

I've been accused of being a coffee snob simply for using a French press, refusing to drink instant., and for bringing my own vessel to work for my coffee. Thanks for making me feel like I'm not alone in the pursuit of a great cup and thanks SO much for your site! 😀

For me, it is a passion and obsession. I drink, sleep, live, breathe coffee. As a barista, I create art and educate customers and readers. I'm picky from the water, coffee (or espresso), origin, roast, grind, brewing method, and cup. Everything has to be the best quality or it's just not worth it. I will wake up earlier each morning if needed to brew coffee myself. If anyone else is to brew my coffee, I must know and trust them. "Coffee Snob"? I'll let you decide.

You're right Nate. Being a "coffee snob" isn't about being a snob, it's just about appreciating the details of coffee. Being a coffee snob doesn't mean you're a coffee jerk 😉 Raza

    Dear Friends, Happy Fool’s Day!

A man went into a bar in a high rise. He saw another man take a pill, take a drink, walk to the window and jump out. He flew around for a minute and zipped back into the bar.
As the amazed newcomer watched, the man repeated this twice more. Finally the man asked if he could have a pill. The flier said it was his last one. The man offered five hundred dollars to no avail, so he made a final offer of a thousand dollars. The man said that it was all he had on him.
The flier reluctantly gave in, took the cash, surrendered the pill, and turned back to the bar. The man took the pill, took a drink, went to the window, and jumped out only to fall to his death. The bartender walked over to the flier at the bar and, wiping a glass, said, “You sure are mean when you’re drunk, Superman.”

    Happy April Fool’s Day!
